when there is not comfort...

watercolor

"I had been sent perhaps
with the hope that seeing me might be of some comfort to her,
but I remember how swiftly I knew
that she could not be comforted.
Comfortlessness had come and occupied the house.
She had been felled,
struck down,
and there she was,
greatly needing comfort
where there was no comfort."

  11. A very moving painting of woe. I saw it yesterday, but had had some woe myself. The painting spoke to me, but I had no words to speak back. Refreshed today, I do. It's a fantastic painting, a perfect illustration for Wendell Berry's quote.

  17. that's a really evocative piece of prose and makes me want to read the book to find out why she can't be comforted. Your painting illustrates the prose perfectly - she looks totally empty, if that makes sense - the droop of her posture perfectly mirroring the sense of loss she feels.
