Invisible (study#3)

watercolor

“Compassion asks us to go where it hurts,
to enter into the places of pain,
to share in brokenness,
 fear,
 confusion,
 and anguish.
Compassion challenges us to cry out with those in misery,
to mourn with those who are lonely,
to weep with those in tears.
Compassion requires us to be weak with the weak,
vulnerable with the vulnerable,
 and powerless with the powerless.
Compassion means full immersion
in the condition of being human.”

  1. Your invisible series reminds me of the grandmothers I saw begging in Moscow, Russia in '94. About broke my heart as they were 'invisible' to the Muscovites.

  7. Wonderful painting with you usual excellent draftsmanship. Sad subject. I am hoping you didn't work from a photo of this desperate street person.

    1. Sadly, I did. She is real. But her posture represents to me something many of us can relate to, at least emotionally of not physically, at some point in our lives. Need. Despair. Rejection. Loneliness. Deep pain invisible to the world. AND YET there is this little cup of HOPE she is holding out... every empty cup has the potential of being filled.

  8. Your Nouwen quote is just as excellent as your drawing.

You are one talented person who conveyed pain in that woman's pose.

  13. This is such an extraordinarily compassionate rendering. It is painful and BEautiful all at once. It holds something I understand and yet something I wish to as well.

  16. I hope this series is going somewhere Minnemie... there's a powerful message in them, it's a pity if they were to end up in the studio. I'm sure the UN, UNESCO etc could use them with your passion and talents.

  38. this is so beautifully, painfully, moving. When I visited my daughter in Prague last spring, I was so touched that the homeless there never verbally ask for money, but prostrate themselves in front of you, cup extended. It is heartbreaking.
